VHS Art Created With Miles of Magnetic Tape

VHS Tape Installations

VHS tape has fascinated New York-based Lithuanian artist Zilvinas Kempinas for a decade. "It’s supposed to be this safe container of the past," he explained in this 2009 Museo interview. "But it is destined to vanish like a dinosaur, to become obsolete, pushed away by new technologies."

Kempinas was selected to represent Lithuania at the 2009 Venice Biennale. He reconstructed and enlarged Tube in a famed Scuola Grande della Misericordia, built by Jacopo Sansovino in the 16th century. In Tube, Kempinas painstakingly strung thousands of feet of unspooled VHS tape between two white doorways, creating a featherlight portal of rippling black lines. Walking through the portal, the strings of tape dance and undulate around you. From certain angles, the strands disappear. From other angles, they reflect their surroundings.

What Kempinas is doing, in essence, is drawing with celluloid. "Videotape is inexpensive," the artist commented in 2009. "It’s a container of visual information, data carrier, but you can perceive it like an abstract line."

DIY : A hand warmer

Little cozy goes a long way (and a hand warmer DIY)

This winter my default has been just about anything warm and cozy. Eat breakfast by the fireplace, adding an extra blanket to the beds, a hot cup of cocoa after being outside, a warm towel to wrap up in after tubs, or….

… reheatable hand-warmers to pop in the pockets.  so cozy.

SUPPLIES: a fat quarter (or more) of this fabric or whatever fabric you have laying around the house, fabric scissors, pinking shears (optional), sewing machine or needle, long pins, rice, and thread.
DIRECTIONS:
1.  using fabric scissors, cut the pattern from our spoonflower fabric OR cut 2-3/4 inch squares from your choice of fabric.  you’ll need two per hand warmer.
2. place two squares of fabric wrong sides together and stitch a 1/4 inch seam around the outside, leaving a 1-1/2 inch opening and backstitching in the beginning and end.  (if you don’t have pinking shears, place fabric write sided together, sew as instructed and then turn right side out.)
3. fill 3/4 of the way up with rice.
4.  using a long pin, block the rice from falling out of the opening and sew closed.
5.  using pinking shears, trim the edges….  it will keep them from fraying.
to use, warm up int he microwave for 20 seconds (or so), but make sure they aren’t too hot before handing over to little hands!

Colorful Tiles of Parisian Floors Shared Through Photographer Sebastian Erras’ Instagram Account

The Ornate Mosaics and Colorful Tiles of Parisian Floors Shared Through Photographer Sebastian Erras’ Instagram Account

Photographer Sebastian Erras‘s Paris-based project has only one perspective—down. This vantage however, never fails to delight as it is captures the ornate mosaics of Parisian floors, brightly patterned tiles and scenes that exist underfoot. Each shot within Parisian Floors (@parisianfloors) is uniform, a cropped image of Erras’s own shoes and the surrounding tile decorations. This repetitive shot ensures we keep our focus on the tiles, highlighting the exquisite forms that make their way below the photographer’s feet.
Inspiration for the project began when Erras took a trip to Morocco, bringing his love of mosaics back with him to France. Here he became aware of the beautiful floors that graced Paris, coming back to the city with a fresh eye to start his Instagram-focused project.
“After a while being in Paris and wandering around the city, the main attractions and sights become a given,” Erras told Colossal. “Now looking down more often I get to see a whole new side of this city! It has been a good motivation to rediscover Paris again.”
Placing the project on Instagram also allows Erras to map the city of Paris through geotags, building comprehensive map of images and allowing the photographer to see which areas of the city he has yet to discover. (via My Modern Met)
